Position 1: Communications Manager – British Office Sudan Primary Objective

The British Office Sudan (BOS) is seeking to appoint a capable, motivated, and experienced individual to lead the design and coordinate the implementation of our office’s communication strategy. This presents a fantastic opportunity, particularly at this critical juncture for Sudan, to ensure that BOS communications are professional, impactful, and engaging.

The Communications Manager will assume a pivotal role within the BOS team, requiring close collaboration with the most senior staff, including the Ambassador. They will serve as the initial point of contact for Sudanese and international journalists and media organizations, leading the design of strategic campaigns. This challenging role demands significant media expertise, the ability to cultivate extensive contacts, and proficiency in social media. The successful candidate should be collaborative, innovative, and self-assured.

Roles and Responsibilities:

As the Communications Manager, you will be responsible for managing the BOS public profile and engaging with local, regional, and international media. This includes overseeing external communications, public diplomacy campaigns, and monitoring perceptions of the UK (and BOS) in Sudan. Additionally, you will provide advice on the local media landscape to the broader office, work on media campaigns, place content, and liaise with local and regional media outlets. A background in media, public relations, or communications is essential, with a focus on bringing creativity, energy, and innovation to our communication channels. Some translation duties may also be assigned in the absence of a Translator.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and implement the BOS Communications Strategy:

Collaborate closely with BOS policy and program leads, as well as FCDO HQ, to strategically use public diplomacy in achieving our goals. Advise senior management on prioritizing campaigns to maximize BOS’s public platform effectiveness. Design and implement Communications Campaigns:

Work with policy and program leads to identify and develop innovative and ambitious communications campaigns, targeting specific audiences and using the most effective channels in the Sudanese media landscape. Evaluate the success of campaigns and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future initiatives. Day-to-day management of our social media and online presence:

Lead the planning, drafting, and publishing of engaging and impactful content on our social media channels. Manage the BOS online presence, aligning with the UK’s policies and analyzing engagement to improve content. Provide press/media summaries to keep BOS colleagues updated on the media landscape and inform policy-making. Stay updated on the latest trends in the media and social media landscape for Sudan, producing a daily written summary of the Sudanese media for BOS and UK colleagues, writing reports on trends and developments, and exploring opportunities to create new communication products for BOS. Manage the BOS relationship with the Press:

Develop an extensive network in Sudanese media, building strong relationships with TV, newspaper, and radio journalists, as well as social media influencers. Advise on how the Ambassador and other BOS leads interact with the media, and organize interviews, op-eds, press conferences, etc.

Essential Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:

Minimum two years of work experience in a relevant field (media, journalism, public relations, and communications, preferably in a bilateral or multilateral agency). Highly organized with a proven track record as a team player, capable of thriving in a diverse, high-performing environment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive working relations with internal and external contacts. Competent in managing social media channels, with a robust understanding of their functionality. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs. Translation skills for complex documents from English to Arabic and vice versa. Relevant university degree. Language requirements:

Language: English, Arabic Fluency in both languages is required. Desirable Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:

Experience in strategic communication planning, preferably based on the OASIS model. Internet-based social media diagnostics and video/photo editing skills. Knowledge of Sudan’s government and political system, culture, media environment, and society. Required Behaviors:

Working Patterns:

This opportunity is for a full-time position, and the postholder is expected to work according to the British Office Sudan’s working pattern.

While the British Office Sudan can offer flexible working, part-time or job-share options are not available due to the critical nature of the Communications Manager role in achieving BOS goals.

Additional Information:

This post will be based in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), alongside some of the BOS team. The remainder of the BOS team will be based between London, East Kilbride, and Nairobi (Kenya). Position 2: Head of English Programmes, Ethiopia

Role Purpose:

Leadership & Management:

Lead, mentor, and manage the English Programmes (EP) team, ensuring alignment with EP strategy, policy, and practice.

Directly manage specific positions as needed, while ensuring adherence to performance management, training, HR, and diversity and inclusion standards.

Create and execute strategic workforce plans to address both present and future requirements of the business.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management:

Proactively build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in the UK and local ELT and education sectors.

Develop professional networks and contribute to English Programmes priorities through research, presentations, and publications.

Represent the British Council’s perspective in external forums, showcasing the UK’s thought leadership.

Sector/Subject Expertise:

Embed evidence-based principles into project design and content development.

Commercial and/or Financial Management:

TEFL-Q or a diploma level qualification in teaching English.
